Career Online High School is an accredited program that is flexible, free, and online. Through Career Online High School, you earn your high school diploma as well as a certificate in one of the following careers in 18 months:

  • Child Care and Education (CDA)*
  • Commercial Driving (CDL)*
  • Food and Hospitality (CPFM)*
  • General Career Preparation
  • Home Care Professional
  • Hospitality and Leisure
  • Office Management
  • Retail Customer Service
  • Security Professional

    *Prepares students to obtain the industry credential.


Follow these easy steps to graduate:

Step 1: Take the short self-assessment survey by clicking the green button below to determine that you meet the program requirements.

 

Step 2: Complete the prerequisite career course in two weeks for less with a 70% grade or higher. You can retake this portion as needed.

Step 3: Meet with a member of SBPL’s Literacy Services Team by making an appointment here.

Step 4: Complete two courses in the 30-day probationary period to maintain your status as a student.

Step 5: Complete 18 credits within 18 months with the support of your academic coach.

Step 6: Graduate!

What support is available for me?

You will be assigned an academic coach who will support you online throughout your entire time in the program. The staff at the Santa Barbara Public Library are also here to support you. Please contact Literacy@SantaBarbaraCA.gov or call (805) 564-5619. 

Who is eligible to become a Career Online High School student?

Adults who are at least 19-years-old and who want to earn their high school diplomas can apply. Students who live within
the jurisdiction of the Santa Barbara Library are eligible to enroll.

How can I enroll in SBPL’s Career Online High School program?

Take the short online survey here to determine that you meet the program requirements. You will be contacted by a staff person via email.

What are the differences between earning a high school diploma through Career Online High School or earning a GED?

While both the GED and the high school diploma are important, there are several differences between them. Some colleges, institutions, and organizations that require a high school diploma and may not accept the GED. COHS provides the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and a career certificate in addition to completing additional job preparation documents and training.

How long will it take for me to graduate?

You have up to 18 months to complete the program, which consists of 18 credits. You may transfer up to 14 credits from former accredited high schools.
