Santa Barbara Public Library Announces New Logo

Santa Barbara Public Library is excited to unveil a new logo, marking the next chapter in our visual identity and evolution of our branch libraries as vibrant hubs for their communities.

Designed in-house by Library staff, the logo draws inspiration from the poppy motif featured in the architecture of the Central Library. Specifically, it echoes the iconic Sunburst Over California Poppies mural above the exterior doors of the Faulkner Gallery — originally painted in 1930 by renowned California landscape artist, John Gamble.

This historic mural was restored during the 2024 creation of the Michael Towbes Library Plaza — a project that marked a new era for SBPL by expanding programming space and public access. The refreshed logo is a natural extension of this transformation.
Reflecting SBPL’s mission, services, and rooted connection to the Santa Barbara community, the new logo and color palette are designed to enhance the Library’s accessibility, visibility, and welcoming presence — while honoring both the local, natural landscape and our historic building.

A Storied Past
The Library’s logos have changed significantly over time — from traditional book-themed visuals to more abstract representations — each emblematic of its era. This new identity is designed to reflect the nature of today’s Library. SBPL is books, community connection, and more!

What’s Next?
You’ll begin to see updated visuals and branded materials throughout 2025. These changes will appear across digital platforms, library materials, printed signage, and library cards. In the interest of sustainability, we’ll phase in the new branding gradually—so you may notice both the old and new logos for a while.

Looking ahead, we’ll also be releasing branded merchandise. Keep an eye out for a poppy tote bag, coming soon to your local Library branch!
