Reading is about more than just books; it’s about understanding the world and our place in it. Santa Barbara Public Library’s summer reading challenge invites the community to set a reading goal for the summer and participate in community events that celebrate learning. To kick off Summer Reading 2023, SBPL is hosting an author talk with Elaine Castillo Friday, June 16, at Central Library’s Faulkner Gallery at 40 E. Anapamu.

Castillo will discuss many concepts explored in her recent collection of essays, How to Read Now, which challenge us to engage more deeply in our reading life. This talk “explores the politics and ethics of reading and insists that we are capable of something better: a more engaged relationship not just with our fiction and our art, but with our buried and entangled histories.”

The first 35 attendees will receive a complimentary copy of How to Read Now, so join us at 5:30 p.m. for a reception and book signing, complete with refreshments from the Friends of the Library and Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation. The talk will begin at 6 p.m.

Participants are also invited to join a Summer Reading Essay Book Club discussion series as part of our summer reading challenge for adults. The series includes three books of essays set in or about California: we’ll begin with an exploration of How to Read Now, then use Castillo’s framework to discuss Joan Didion’s The White Album and José Vadi’s Inter State: Essays from California. Complimentary physical copies will be available to participants who register for the book discussions, and the books can also be found in digital and ebook formats.
