Santa Barbara Public Library’s 2022 Book to Action Event Series Explores Unique Ecology of Channel Islands

Authored on

The Santa Barbara Public Library has received a grant from the California State Library to distribute 100 copies of the featured title, Island Visions, and implement related programming. The goal is to inspire members of the community to engage with important topics and make meaningful connections with each other, while taking action to improve their lives and invest in a more sustainable future.

Island Visions, edited by Jacob Seigel Brielle and illustrated by Isaac Seigel-Boettner, features essays and infographics written by scientists, environmentalists, rangers, fisherman, and local outdoor enthusiasts and explores what is special about the Channel Islands. The book dives deeper into why it’s important to conserve the environment and the cultural significance of this unique place. Related programming will help residents understand the ecology, geography, and history of the Channel Islands and our local oceans waters, and inspire collective action and engagement on environmental issues.

Book to Action kicks off with a Library on the Go van event at 2:30 pm on April 2, 2022 at Shoreline Park with a poetry workshop led by Santa Barbara Poet Laureate Emma Trelles. Learn about writing an acrostic poem inspired by the beauty and wonder of the Santa Barbara Channel Islands.

SBPL will host an in-person author discussion with editor and illustrators Jacob Seigel Brielle and Isaac Seigel-Boettner, who will share their inspiration and explain how Island Visions became a book, at noon on Sunday, April 10, 2022 at in the Faulkner Gallery at Central Library, 40 E Anapamu.

Books will be available at special events and Library on the Go visits through April and June, with a limit of one per family. You can also check it out from the Library, including express 7 day checkout copies.

The Library is partnering with local organizations as part of the library’s Book to Action programming from April to June, exploring topics from water quality and ocean health, local marine biology, a guide to hiking and backpacking on the Channel Islands, a beach cleanup day with Explore Ecology, a demonstration and workshop about local DIY plastics recycling, and more. Visit the Library’s Calendar or sign up to receive the Library’s weekly email newsletter for updates on additional events.

About Book to Action

Book to Action is a program framework that takes the basic book club concept and expands it to create a dynamic series of events for adults and multigenerational groups. Librarians work closely with community partners in engaging community members to read and discuss a book on a current topic, attend author or speaker events, and put their new-found knowledge into action by participating in a community service project or civic engagement activity related to the book.

This project was supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
